Script Timer

Free Online Teleprompter

A free online teleprompter that runs in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. Paste your script, set your speed in words per minute, and start reading.

0:48 estimated read time at 150 wpm, 121 words.

Space play or pause. Up and down arrows change speed. Left and right arrows change font size. Esc exits. R restarts.

How to use this teleprompter

  1. Paste your script into the text box. Your last script stays saved on this device, so you can pick up where you left off.
  2. Set your speed in words per minute. Anything from 80 to 220 works, and 150 is a good place to start.
  3. Choose a font size you can read from where you'll sit or stand. Bigger is easier on the eyes and keeps you from squinting at the lens.
  4. Press Start. A 3-second countdown runs so you can get set before the first line moves.
  5. Pause with the spacebar. Press it again to pick back up right where you stopped.

Set your scroll speed in words per minute

Most teleprompters give you a speed slider from 1 to 10. Nobody knows what a 6 means until they've tried it three times. Words per minute is a real number you can plan around. Set 150 wpm on a 300-word script and you know it runs about 2 minutes before you hit record.

Pick a pace, hit Start, and the scroll matches it. If it feels fast, tap the down arrow to drop 5 wpm and keep going.

Use it on Zoom, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android

Zoom

Open the teleprompter in a browser window next to your call. Shrink the window and place it just under your webcam so your eyes stay near the lens. Bump up the font size so you can read it from a comfortable distance. Your audience sees you looking at them, not at your notes.

Mac

Open the teleprompter in any browser and paste your script. Go fullscreen when you're ready to record, then press Esc to exit. The keyboard shortcuts let you control speed and font size without touching the mouse.

Windows

It runs in your browser, so there's nothing to install. Paste your script, set your speed, and go fullscreen to keep distractions off the screen. Use the spacebar to pause and R to restart a take.

iPhone

Open the page in your phone's browser and paste your script. It works in portrait and landscape, so turn the phone whichever way fits your setup. Prop it close to your camera so your eyes don't drift.

Android

Open the teleprompter in your browser and paste your script. Portrait and landscape both work. Set a bigger font size than you would on a laptop, since the screen is small and you'll be reading from arm's length.

Mirror mode for teleprompter glass

Teleprompter glass is a beam splitter. It's a pane of glass coated so it reflects some light and lets the rest through. A screen sits below it facing up, and the glass, angled in front of the camera lens, bounces the words toward you while the camera shoots straight through.

That reflection flips the image left to right. Text that looks normal on the screen reads backward in the glass. So the screen has to show the text mirrored, and the glass flips it back so you read it the right way.

Turn on Mirror in this tool and the text flips horizontally, ready for your glass.

What is a teleprompter?

A teleprompter is a device or app that scrolls your script in front of you while you speak, so you can deliver it without memorizing it or looking down at notes. That's the teleprompter meaning in plain terms. You read, and it looks like you're talking.

The script scrolls at a steady pace on a screen near the camera. You read the lines as they move, and you control the speed so it matches the way you talk. With teleprompter glass, the words show up right over the lens, so your eyes stay on the camera the whole time.

News anchors, speakers, and video creators use one. So do founders recording product videos, teachers recording lessons, and anyone who's tired of doing take 14 because they lost their place.

Teleprompter FAQ

Is this teleprompter really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no download. Open the page, paste your script, and start reading.

Do I need to download anything?

No. It runs in your browser on a laptop, desktop, or phone. Your last script stays saved on that device, so it's there next time you open the page.

How does a teleprompter work?

It scrolls your script at a steady speed while you read it out loud. You set the pace in words per minute so the scroll keeps up with you. Put it close to your camera and it looks like you're talking straight to your audience.

What speed should I set my teleprompter to?

Start at 150 words per minute, which is natural conversation. Go to 120 for slow and deliberate delivery or 170 for energetic content. Use the up and down arrows to adjust by 5 wpm while you read.

Can I use this teleprompter on Zoom?

Yes. Open it in a browser window and place that window just under your webcam so your eyes stay near the lens. Shrink the window and raise the font size so it's easy to read at that size.

Does it work with teleprompter glass?

Yes. Turn on Mirror and the text flips horizontally, so it reads correctly in the reflection. Go fullscreen to fill the screen under your glass.
