How to use the passive voice checker

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Look at the highlighted sentences.
  3. Check the count and the share of sentences that are passive.
  4. Rewrite the ones that read better in active voice.

Then time your script to hear how much tighter it runs.

What is passive voice?

In passive voice, the thing being acted on comes first and the one doing the action comes last or disappears. Passive reads like this. The trailer was cut by the editor in one night. Active flips it so the doer leads. The editor cut the trailer in one night. Active is shorter and hits harder.

How this checker finds passive voice

The checker looks for a form of 'to be' followed by a past participle, like 'was written' or 'is being reviewed'. It's a pattern check, not a full read of your meaning. Some flags will be fine as written, so review each one before you change it.

When passive voice is fine

Passive voice is fine when the doer doesn't matter or isn't known. 'The building was built in 1920' works because nobody cares who poured the concrete. It also helps when you want the focus on the result, or when you're writing a formal report where the action matters more than the person.

How to fix passive voice

  1. Find who's doing the action and move them to the front.
  2. Swap the 'to be' verb and past participle for one strong verb.
  3. If there's no clear doer, add one or leave the sentence alone.
